Publications:

  • He Contributed five chapters to the first edition of Indian Textbook of Neurosurgery on Vascular diseases, and chapters to Recent Advances in Stroke Research, Progress in Clinical Neurosciences and Tropical Neurosurgery. 
  • He has over 105 publications and over 120 scientific papers presented in national and international conferences, 9 research projects to his credit. 
  • He has also guided 17 other experimental and clinical research projects for the Postgraduates in addition to guiding Ph.D. programme.
  • He has the rare distinction of being a member of the prestigious Ad – hoc committee on standardization of Terminology and Surgical Results of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies from Asia for 8 consecutive years ( 1993 – 2001 ). During his long career, he mentored over 40 students for M.Ch. degree in Neurosurgery.

Academic:

  • In the field of Clinical research, studies on Epidemiology of spontaneous Subarachnoid haemorrhage, Cerebral Vasospasm following aneurysmal SAH, Craniovertebral anomalies, Pineal region tumors, Therapeutic embolization of  large cerebral AVMs and Role of Lignocaine in the reduction of ICP are his original contributions. 
  • In the field of experimental research, development of canine models of hydrocephalus and syringohydromyelia have helped him in carrying out various further studies.  
  • In a multiphase study of experimental SAH, ultrastructural changes were shown in the basal vessels and this “Vasculopathy” was thought to be the basis of “Cerebral vasospasm” seen following aneurysmal  SAH.  
  • His work on Urokinase in the management of experimental intraventricular haemorrhage in the canine model has borne fruitful clinical applications. 
  • His research endeavours in allied neurosciences include Demonstration of mycobacterial antigens in intracranial tuberculomas, slime production by pathogenic bacteria in immunocompromised patients and Assessment of Proliferative activity in intracranial tumors.  
  • His considerable drive as Principal Investigator has helped in developing a fully tested indigenous hydrocephalus shunt system of international standard, “ceredrain“, currently in clinical use since 1991.


Awards and Honours:

  • Prof.Rout was elected as Fellow, National Academy of Medical Sciences ( FAMS) in 1991.  He was awarded as “A” class Scientist – 1991 Institute Award, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute, Trivandrum for outstanding contribution to the development of a Hydrocephalus Shunt System and Institute of Neurology ( Madras) Oration Award in 1992. 
  • Was conferred the Certificate of “Diploma in Laser Am Nerven System” Karl – Franzens University, Graz, Austria – 1993 and as Fellow of INSA in 1997 and served the sectional committee for 3 years (1996 -1998). 
  • The Department of Culture, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh and the Kinnera Art Theatres, Hyderabad honoured Prof. Rout with Kinnera Award in recognition of his pioneering work in Neurosciences in 2003.  
  • He was invited to deliver the prestigious Dr Yellapragada Subba Rao Memorial Oration on the eve of IMA Platinum Jubilee Celebrations in 2004, the Ninth E.S.Krishnamoorthy Memorial Lecture and Prof. R.M.Varma oration in 2008.  
  • He was conferred “For the Sake of Honour Award" by the Rotary Club of Madras Metro and “Rashtriya Gaurav Award “ by the International Friendship Society of India in 2011 and “Life Time Achievement Award” by Madras Neuro Trust in 2013.
